About Gwen

Passion and Motivation

Knowledge is power when adopted

As a first-term Biology undergraduate I learned that African Americans were more likely to develop diabetes due to dietary practices. I was stunned! Immediately, I changed my diet. This decision was NOT popular on the home front! I found myself refusing to eat food that my mother had been serving all of my life.  Yet, that one decision, “I will change what I eat”, has shaped my health status throughout my life.

When my daughters were in high school I went to grad school to pursue my passion—nutrition and health development. At one point we were all in college or graduate school at the same time!

I emerged from this challenging experience with a Masters degree in Health Science (MS) with a  Nutrition concentration from James Madison University, as well as a Registered Dietitian (RD). I later went on to become a Licensed Dietitian (LD) in West Virginia and Maryland.

Equipped with special interests in diabetes and minority health, I embarked upon a wonderful mission of assisting people of all ethnic backgrounds to experience health development.  Over the years, I have worked in a 75-bed rural hospital, 2 metropolitan hospital complexes and spent 10 years giving award-winning service to US Veterans at the VA hospital in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Knowledge is power when embraced

Having served in such diverse settings has given me considerable insight into problems that families and individuals confront while battling chronic illness. I have observed, first-hand, the devastating consequences of chronic illness and the remarkable capacity of food to halt, control and in some cases, reverse the disease process. Again and again I have helped others to experience how a balanced real-food regimen can transform their quality of life for the better.

Throughout my own life’s journey, I have been blessed and disciplined enough to remain free of major problems associated with chronic disease.  No diabetes. No heart attacks. No strokes. No obesity. My mind and memory remain clear. I have well-controlled blood pressure, within normal range, that is managed with real food and a small amount of medication.  I am still very active, even riding a camel in Egypt with my daughter for my 60th birthday!  So I follow the same advice I give my patients and, thankfully, it is working for me, too. Five decades have come and gone since I made the decision to change. I have never regretted one single, solitary moment of health, vitality and sense of well-being I have been experiencing since that change. (Fyi: in the camel photo I was almost 60. In the lab jacket photo I was 64.)

You will be happy to know that, chronic disease is avoidable, in some cases reversible and, at the very least, controllable. If you are ready to begin your journey of health development, whether from being “sick and tired” or just want to learn healthy, science-based alternatives to your current diet, let's get started now. Together let's get on with your journey toward your best health today, by unleashing the power of real-food into your life. You will soon have the strength and energy to explore a world of wonderful possibilities waiting just for you!

One of my greatest satisfactions is engaging a person in discovering the powerful gift of life surging through their body. My favorite memory is of an 80- year old gentleman who came to my specialty clinic using a walker, on oxygen, debilitated, tired and just waiting to die. He had been suffering with diabetes and it's complications for many, many years. After education and counseling he decided to give it one more try. After 12 weeks of intensive Nutrition Therapy the walker and oxygen were gone, he was exercising daily, and looking for a girlfriend!
